Ivory Coast's self-proclaimed President arrested

Laurent Gbagbo, the self-declared president of Ivory Coast has reportedly been arrested.

News media report that after days of resistance, Gbagbo’s residence was stormed by troops. The arrest might put an end to the civil war which has claimed hundreds of live throughout the nation.

Gbagbo’s refusal to accept that he had lost the presidential election last year to Alassane Ouattara, led to the country to fall into a civil war. Ouattara is in fact recognised as Ivory Coast’s President by the international community following the elections which took place.

The French Embassy in Ivory Coast said Gbagbo was seized by forces loyal to Ouattara.
