France and Britain criticise Nato’s bombing campaign

The two countries who launched the first air attacks on Libya in coalition with the United States, criticised Nato’s bombing campaign stating it should do more to stop Col Muammar Gaddafi from bombing the civilians.

News media report that the heavy criticism followed new bombing on Misrata and the collapse of an African Union peace initiative.

UK’s Foreign Secretary William Hague said Nato must intensify its attacks and called on other countries in the alliance to match the country’s supply of extra ground attack aircraft in Libya.

But Nato rejected the criticism, stating it is operating under a U.N. mandate to protect civilians.

“Nato is conducting its military operations in Libya with vigour within the current mandate. The pace of the operations is determined by the need to protect the population,” Nato said.
