Mexico drug gang boss arrested over ‘mass graves’

Martin Omar Estrada Luna, known as ‘El Kilo’, is accused of being involved in the recent massacre of 145 people found buried in mass graves in San Fernando last week.

Luna is also suspected of being the mastermind behind the murders of 72 US-bound migrants in the same township in the northern state of Tamaulipas on the US border in August.

According ot news media, the Zetas drug gang, of which Luna is the boss, is a notorious gang formed in the 1990s by former military commandos now engaged in a fight to death with their former bosses, the Gulf cartel.

Mexico is notorious for the drug exportation, where reportedly there are seven major drug gangs.

Since December 2006, almost 35,000 people have been killed in violence related to raging wars for control of smuggling routes and government efforts to eradicate them.

Mexico’s president Felipe Calderon has pledged to bring the killers behind the mass graves to justice.
