Mother and four children found buried in their garden, father missing

French police searching for a missing family have launched a murder probe after five bodies where found buried in the garden of their home, in Nantes. The father is believed to have been a US secret agent.

The discovery was made following the discovery of a severed leg. Following a search of the house and gardens, officers found the corpses, riddled with bullet wounds, buried in the garden. Officials report there were no signs of struggle in the house.

Officials say the bodies are believed to be those of Agnes Dupont de Ligonnes, 49, and her four children: Arthur, 21, Thomas, 18, Anne,16 and Benoit, 13.

The father, Xavier Dupont de Ligonnes, is still missing.  The family’s two dogs were also found buried.

The family is believed to have disappeared on April 3 or 4 and police are following the trail that they were kidnapped and killed. The case has been complicated further by strange notes and emails obtained by officials.

One letter suggests the family wanted to move to Australia, while an email sent by the father reveals he was a secret US agent about to testify in a drug case. It was also revealed that they were leaving to join the witness protection programme.
