Syria troops open fire on protesters, five dead
Syrian security forces have reportedly fired live bullets and teargas at tens of thousands of demonstrators across the country, killing at least five people.
Media reports shootings on the outskirts of Damascus, when the deaths reportedly took place. Some 40,000 protesters in Douma chanted: ‘the people want the downfall of the regime’.
The movement in Syria seeking change had promised a day of demonstrations on what it is calling ‘Great Friday’. State TV said citizens would be allowed to protest peacefully. But witnesses speaking to news media claimed security forces have opened fire onto the citizens.
International news media cannot confirm the shootings independently as journalists have been expelled from Syria and access to trouble spots is restricted.
