Occupy Wall Street plan new protests after ‘eviction notice’
Occupy Wall Street protesters plan demonstrations in Zuccotti Park in Manhattan, New York after being told to leave by a private firm that owns the space.
The private firm told the protesters of Occupy Wall Street to leave the area and gave notice that regulations would be enforced after the park was cleaned. Sleeping bags on the ground and lying on benches will be banned as part of the regulations.
Park owners Brookfield Properties representatives distributed the notice on Thursday. Although regulations were in place before the protests began, they were not enforced.
The US has seen a spread of related protests after hundreds camped at Zuccotti Parl for four weeks and emails have been sent by protest organisers to supporters asking them to join to “defen the occupation from eviction”.
"As sections of the park are cleaned, they will reopen to the public. All are welcome to enjoy the park for its intended purpose as an open neighbourhood plaza, in compliance with posted rules," Brookfield said in a statement.
After the park has been cleaned, New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said individuals will be able to return to the park but without the gear, equipment and sleeping bags.
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said protesters would be allowed to stay unless they broke the law.
