UK defence secretary Liam Fox resigns
UK defence secretary Liam Fox resigns following allegations made about his working relationship with friend and self appointed adviser Adam Werritty.
Less than a week since his meeting in Malta with Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi to discuss the situation in Libya, UK defence secretary Liam Fox has resigned.
Fox said he had “mistakenly allowed” his personal life to become to involved with his professional responsibilities in a letter addressed to Prime Minister David Cameron.
"The consequences of this have become clearer in recent days. I am very sorry for this. I have also repeatedly said that the national interest must always come before personal interest,” Fox said in his letter.
Investigations had been conducted by the cabinet secretary following claims made that Fox had broken the ministerial code after it emerged that Werritty had accompanied Fox on 18 foreign trips despite no official involvement.
"I now have to hold myself to my own standard. I have therefore decided, with great sadness, to resign from my post as secretary of state for defence," Fox said.
