Gunman opens fire on cathedral worshipers
At least two people shot dead and another six injured after a security guard opened fire on Sakhalin Island.
Two people have been shot dead while another six were wounded after a gunman opened fire at an Orthodox cathedral on Russia's Sakhalin Island, off the country's eastern coast.
A state-news agency reported that a man opened fire, killing a nun and a churchgoer on Sunday at the main cathedral in the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
Archbishop Tikhon, the regional leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, has since said that most of the injured did not suffer any life threatening injuries.
Most of the wounded were shot in the legs.
The gunman, identified as a security guard in the city, has been apprehended.
No motive for the attack has been reported.
The latest attack increases worries in Olympic host country, just days after a teenager shot and killed a teacher and a policeman at a school in Northern Moscow.
However, police ruled out any links between the latest shootings and the Winter Olympics in Sochi.
