Wyclef denies not making it to the Haiti list

Officials have said that the hip-hop star, Wyclef Jean, did not make it to the list of approved candidates for the Haitian presidential election, whilst the musician denies all.

“He is not on the list as I speak,” a member of the provisional electoral council said. According to the same member, the country’s electoral disputes bureau had ruled Jean’s candidacy as not meeting several legal requirements.

Answering back to the electoral official, Jean said "that this is not true."

Following an interview on CNN's Larry KIng Live programme, he said that "we are going to be OK when the list comes out."

The country’s provisional electoral council requires candidates to have spent the last five consecutive years living in Haiti. Jean lives and works in the US. In his defence, Jean said that his appointment as a roving ambasador by President Rene Preval in 2007 exempted him from the residency requirement.

Jean, who has formally announced his candidacy earlier this month, was among 34 contenders who filed the initial candidacy bids for the presidential elections.

The provisional electoral council is due to formally publish the list of approved candidates later on.
