Clash in Donetsk airport leaves dozens dead

Fighting around the airport of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine has left at least 30 pro-Russian separatists dead.

Sporadic gunfire was heard near the airport yesterday after separatist militants stormed the Sergei Prokofiev Donetsk airport in the early hours of Monday morning. The Ukrainian military responded with air strikes and heavily armed troops.

Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said there were no casualties among Ukrainian troops.

Ukraine's president-elect, Petro Poroshenko, promised to end the armed insurgency in the east of the country in "hours".
