A man was arrested by the U.S. Secret Service after jumping over the White House fence yesterday evening as authorities were on heightened alert after shootings at Canada’s Parliament and the fatal shooting of a soldier at the War Memorial.

Uniformed Secret Service officers used dogs to subdue the man before he could reach the executive mansion, according to a spokesman. A similar episode a month ago, in which a man vaulted the fence and entered the White House, helped lead to the resignation of Secret Service Director Julia Pierson.

The incident began about 7:16p.m. in Washington. The man, identified as Dominic Adesanya, 23, of Bel Air, Maryland. was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

The White House was put on lockdown after the incident, which occurred shortly after President Obama met with senior advisors in the Oval Office.

Video footage captured by news organizations showed the man, wearing shorts, on the grass of the White House’s North Lawn. He kicked a police dog who ran at him, and wrestled with a second one before being brought to the ground.
