President in Belgium to commemorate First World War

The president will be attending a commemorative ceremony marking one hundred years since the start of the first World War.

President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca and her husband Edgar Preca this afternoon departed for Belgium, to attend a commemorative ceremony marking one hundred years since the start of the first World War.

The ceremony is taking place at Ypres and Nieuwpoort. The First Battle of Ypres was a First World War battle fought for the strategically important town of Ypres in western Belgium in October and November 1914.

Dolores Cristina will be acting president in her absence
