60 killed in accidental blast in Sri Lanka

An accidental explosion of a truck carrying explosives killed at least 60 people in a police station near the city of Batticaloa, Sri Lanka.

“Sixty people inside the police station have been killed. Most of them are policeman,” military spokesman, Ubaya Madawela said.

The truck carrying the ammunition was parked next to the police station in Karadiyanaru when it exploded. The spokesman said that the explosives were to be delivered to a rock quarry.

It has also been reported that amongst the dead were two foreign citizens.

The two Chinese nationals were working on a road construction project and had gone to collect explosives to use in their work when the explosion occurred, Madawala said.
