Nine ISAF soldiers killed in Afghanistan helicopter crash

A helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan has left nine members of the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) dead, and another three injured.

The nationalities of the Nato personnel have not yet been identified. The injured include a Nato soldier, an Afghan soldier and a US civilian.

It is not clear what caused the crash, but the ISAF said there was no enemy fire as the aircraft descended, suggesting the helicopter was not shot down.

The ISAF also did not give a location of the incident, and added that the nationalities of the deceased will not be released until the relatives have been contacted.

"The cause of the crash is under investigation," it said in a statement. "There are no reports of enemy fire in the area."

This year has been the deadliest year for foreign troops since the beginning of the US-led invasion in 2001, where 529 soldiers have been killed so far in Afghanistan, according to a website iCasualties.

The three injured have been taken to an ISAF medical facility for treatment.

There are almost 150,000 foreign troops fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan, supporting about 300,000 Afghan security forces.
