Croatia’s Prime Minister has said that his country will “force” Hungary to accept refugees by continuing to move them to the border.

Zoran Milanovic warned that Croatia was losing control of the refugee crisis and that it would give them food, water and medical attention, and send them on their way to Hungary.

"There has not been an agreement with Hungary. We have in some way forced them to accept the refugees by sending them to the border and we will continue to do so," he said.

Over 20,000 refugees, the majority of whom are Syrian, have entered Croatia since Tuesday, when Hungary blocked their route to the European Union through its southern border with Serbia with a metal fence, tear gas and water cannon.

However, Hungary's border with Croatia remains open and the Croatian government has sent around 8,000 to the border so far, promoting Budapest to accuse Zagreb of breaking international law by not registering the refugees.

Hungarian soldiers have now started to build a second fence on its Croatian border, a move condemned by Milanovic.

"Borders can only be closed by brute force, and that means killing,” he said.
