Dutch police said a collision between a freight ship and a passenger boat near Amsterdam had capsized the ferry and thrown several passengers overboard. One person is reported missing.

A German freight ship collided with a small passenger ferry in a canal near Amsterdam Friday morning, overturning the smaller boat and knocking several people into the water, Dutch police said.

Police spokesman Frans Zuiderhoek told Dutch state broadcaster NOS that emergency services including divers and a helicopter plucked all passengers out of the water, and one passenger is still reported missing.

Other reports said the one missing person is possibly the ferry's captain, was missing.

The accident shut down shipping traffic in the busy Amsterdam-Rhine canal, a 72-kilometer long waterway that connects Amsterdam with the Rhine River.

The collision took place near the town of Nieuwer Ter Aa, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of Amsterdam.
