Suicide attack on UN office in Afghanistan

A suicide car bomber and three armed militants wearing explosives vests and dressed as women, attacked a United Nations office in western Afghanistan.

Afghan security forces managed to kill the attackers and no UN employees were harmed. The Ministry of Interior in Afghanistan said three guards working at the compound were injured.

“The situation is now resolved,” a spokesman for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said. “All UN staff have been accounted for.”

The attack took place as four militants drove up to the UN compound in a car laden with explosives. From the car they fired a rocket toward the entrance, however they did not manage to break the gate. Seeing that this did not work, three of the militants got out of the work, whilst the fourth one blew himself up in the vehicle. The explosion managed to break the gate, letting the other three pass through the compound.

The three attackers were wearing police uniforms covered with burqas and underneath they had suicide vests.

Guards at the UN compound and policeman engaged in a gun fight and killed the three attackers.
