Dilma Rousseff, 62, was last night elected as Brazil’s new president, became the first female president in her country’s history.

Rousseff, a former Marxist rebel who was jailed and tortured during Brazil’s military dictatorship, vowed to uphold the legacy of her predecessor, Luiz Inaci Lula da Silva.

“The happiness I feel today for my win is mixed with sadness for his departure,” the new President said. “The task of succeeding him is difficult and challenging. But I know I will honor this legacy and extend his work.”

With an estimated 135 million Brazilians who went out to vote, Rousseff polled 56% compared to her rival’s 44%. During her first speech, she vowed to eradicate extreme poverty in Brazil.

Rousseff will take charge as from January 1 next year, when Lula is required to step down having completed the maximum two consecutive terms permitted by law.
