Greece on terror alert as parcel explodes in Athens, another was addressed to Sarkozy

A parcel exploded at a courier company in Athens, whilst police detonated two more bombs wrapped in packages.

Greek police said it had intercepted a booby-trapped parcel addressed to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, after another package exploded at a courier company in Athens.

"One of the explosive devices that the suspects were carrying was addressed to the President of the French Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy," a police spokesman said.

He said the other parcels were addressed to the embassies of Belgium, Netherlands and Mexico. The latter one exploded earlier in Athens.

"The bomb exploded minutes after two men handed the parcel. A female employee has suffered minor burns," the police said.

Two suspects, aged 22 and 24, were both carrying handguns and wearing bullet-proof vests. One of them was a suspected member of a Greek leftist guerrilla group known as the Fire Conspiracy Cells, police said.

The parcel addressed to the French President was found in the hands of two far-left Greek militants.

"The incident seems rather ridiculous and in Sarkozy's case it's quite evident that this parcel would never have reached its destination," a police spokesman said.
