Militants planned to attack German Parliament building

A German magazine has revealed that Germany’s decision to step up security measures was caused by the discovery of militant plans to break into the Reichstag parliament building and shoot hostages.

The weekly Der Spiegel said a foreign jihadist had informed security officials about a plan for armed militants to enter the building and open fire. Police had considered the information as “credible”.

The jihadist said the group of attackers was to be made up of six people: two had already arrived in Berlin and another four were on their way.

According to the magazine, the information had prompted officials to announce they were raising security, especially at public places including airports and train stations.

The Interior Minister said authorities were on guard against threats of an armed attack similar to that which killed 166 in Mumbai, India, in 2008.
