In the latest incident of clashes between different groups, the culmination of a weekend of violence, a crowd in the Jhelum area of Kashmir pelted a police officer's car with stones and pushed it into a river, drowning the officer inside vehicle.

At least 23 people have died and many more injured in clashes over the death of a popular separatist commander, Burhan Wani, who died in a gunfight with the Indian army on Friday. He was a commander of the region's largest rebel group, Hizbul Mujahideen.

Kashmir, claimed in its entirety by both India and Pakistan, has been a flashpoint for more than 60 years, sparking wars between the countries.

Within the disputed Muslim-majority territory, some militant groups took up arms for independence or a merger with Pakistan and it has seen clashes that have sometimes spilled onto the streets.
