Five die practising extreme sports in France

Weekend sees five fatal accidents in extreme sports in French Alps

International media report that five people have lost their lives while practising extreme sports in the French Alps throughout the weekend.

The victims comprised of two climbers, a paraglider, a hanglider and a wingsuit jumper.

The Guardian reports the rescuers found a paraglider’s body on rocks in the Haute-Savoie region on the Swiss border on Sunday afternoon. According to emergency services, the man had plunged to his death from the Buclon mountain, which is 2,072m high.

Two French climbers – a 34-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman – also died further south earlier on Sunday, after falling from a 50m height on La Meije mountain, and on Saturday, a 32-year-old man also died after diving off the Dent d’Arclusaz mountain in a wingsuit.

Earlier in the day, a hang-gliding instructor, 49, died after plunging out of his two-seater near Lake Annecy.
