Colombian landslide buries 200

Around 200 people are thought to be buried in a landslide that swept over 10 houses near Medellin, Colombia, Red Cross workers said.

“The initial count is that there may be 150-200 people considered missing. So far, we have rescued three alive,” a Red Cross operations deputy director said.

It has been reported that the landslide buried 10 houses, three-storey high each. About 300 residents of the neighbourhood rushed to search for missing friends and many tried to help rescuers pull away the rubble.

“We are focused on moving rubble to see if we find survivors,” he said.

Before this weekend’s disaster, as of last week, Colombian government had estimated weather related damage at more than 300 million disasters.

In the recent weeks, Colombia was hit by heavy rains that have left at least 176 people dead, 225 injured and 1.5 million people homeless nationwide.
