Video | German tourist shark-mauled in Egypt

A shark mauled a German tourist to death at an Egyptian Red Searesort the fourth victim of a spate of shark attacks all occurring within the past week.

The tourist, a 70-year-old woman was swimming off Sharm El-Sheikh when she was attacked.

The latest killing comes in the wake of a spate of shark attacks. The first left two snorkelers seriously injured on 30 November to the north of Namaa Bay while a third swimmer was also attacked the following day.

NGO Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association maintained however that pictures of a captured oceanic whitetip shark and a dead mako shark that authorities said were responsible for the first attacks did not match photographs of a larger whitetip taken by the divers before they were attacked.

Famed oceanographic researcher Jacques Cousteau described the oceanic whitetip as "the most dangerous of all sharks".

“It is clear that they don’t show the same individual,” the NGO said in a statement on its website posted on 3 December, a day before authorities reopened beaches in the area. Tourism Minister Zoheir Garranah wasn’t reportedly available for comment.

Millions of tourists visit Egypt’s eastern coastline every year seeking sun, sand and diving. Tourism accounts for 12.6 per cent of jobs in the country, and the government expects revenue to increase more than 17 perc ent this year to as much as $13 billion.
