Afghan suicide attack kills 17

A suicide attack inside a public bathhouse in southern Afghanistan left 17 people dead, including a police commander. 21 others were wounded.

The attack took place in the Kandahar province. A spokesman for the Kandahar governor said the target of the attack was the police commander who died in the blast. The commander was bathing at the time.

“This brutal and inhumane act was the work of the enemies of Islam and humanity,” he said. “The other casualties were all civilians.”

Since 2001, violence in Afghanistan has escalated with record casualties on all sides of the conflict. The insurgency has spread from the traditional strongholds in the south and east to the areas in the north and south, once considered to be peaceful.
