Nine dead in Colombia rebel attack

During a rebel attack on a police station in southern Colombia, nine persons were killed. Three of these were soldiers.

According to General Juan Carlos Salazar, the raid was carried out by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in the town of San Vincente del Caguan.

The Colombian troops responded to the attack killing five FARC fighters. Four soldiers and a young civilian were also wounded.

The FARC has been at war with the Colombian government since 1964. Its fighters amount to between 7,000 and 11,000. Currently, the rebels are holding 19 soldiers and police officers hostage.
