Kidney deal leads to release of sisters from prison

Two sisters who have been serving life sentences for armed robbery were released from a US prison on the condition that one donates a kidney to the other.

Gladys, 36, and Jamie Scott, 38, left the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility smiling and waving after having spent the last 16 years in jail.

Haley Barbour, Mississippi governor, suspended the jail sentences on the condition that Gladys donates a kidney to her sister who requires dialysis. Moreover, he explained that his decision was led by the fact that Jamie’s kidney dialysis and treatment were a financial burden on the state.

Gladys said she was willing to donate a kidney to her sister.

“There were times when we wanted to give up but I told my sister we’re going to make it, we’re coming out of here, we’re not going to die,” the younger sister said.

The two were convicted of rubbing two men at gunpoint back in 1993 making off with just $11. The men had been driving the sisters to a nightclub in northern Mississippi when they led them into an ambush where a group of teens beat them up.
