BREAKING: Police respond to alert at Paris's Notre Dame cathedral amid reports of gunshots and panic.
The scene has been cordoned off by armed police. One Twitter user inside the cathedral reports confusion at the sounds outside. An unconfirmed report is that a police man shot a man who tried to assault him outside the historic landmark.
A witness who is locked down inside Notre Dame told Sky News that "a couple of thousands" are currently inside the Cathedral, but everyone is safe and calm.
He said that police said the reason they were locked in because of a "police incident".
