France’s President adopts dog and takes him to work

Emmanuel Macron was joined by his newly-adopted rescue dog as he welcomed leaders for a mini summit in Paris

The dog has been named Nemo, after Captain Nemo the fictional hero of Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea

French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte have adopted a Labrador-griffin cross, who yesterday took his first steps as France's "first dog" whilst Macron greeted Niger’s President Mahamodou Issoufou ahead of a mini-summit on migration.

The couple adopted the black male dog from an animal shelter over the weekend.

The Elysee Palace press service said Nemo was named after Captain Nemo, the fictional hero of Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea. Macron is a fan of the book.

Nemo appeared at ease in his new role on Monday as he accompanied Mr Macron on the presidential palace steps to welcome President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger.

Since the early 1970s, all French presidents have had Labrador dogs, media report.
