Updated | Multiple deaths reported in stampede at Mumbai train station

The incident at Mumbai's Prabhadevi Railway Station, previously known as Elphinstone station, connecting two of the city's major local lines was triggered by heavy rainfall and overcrowding. 

The deadly stampede is understood to have happened at around 10:30am local time, during the morning rush hour.

Anil Saxena, railway spokesman, said that the crowd on the footbridge grew larger and larger as passengers were attempting to take shelter from the heavy rain. Once the rain stopped, the crowd began moving, with people trying to leave the station all at the same time. 

Television and social media footage from the scene showed heaving crowds, apparently trapped on a narrow footbridge, between platforms, desperately trying to climb over stairways and railings to escape the chaos, as lifeless bodies were pulled free.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital and currently, senior railway officers are present at the scene. According to reports, the stampede was on a footbridge, leading to the station.

Reporter Yogita Limaye, stationed in Mumbai, said that the incident has once again put the spotlight on Mumbai's transport infrastucture, which has been criticised for being unsatisfactory and old, given the millions of people who use it everyday.

Narenda Modi, Indian prime minister, posted to Twitter, expressing his condolences: 

My deepest condolences to all those who have lost their lives due to the stampede in Mumbai. Prayers with those who are injured.

Modi added that Railway Minister Piyush Goyal was in Mumbai "taking stock of the situation and ensuring all assistance".
