Three people have been killed and several others injured in a Christmas Day attack on the Libyan Foreign Ministry in Tripoli, according to the Associated Press. Gunfire and at least one explosion were reported inside the building.

A suicide bomber is believed to have detonated an explosive device in the building, with a second bomber having been shot dead before he could detonate his device.

The Libyan Observer, citing security sources, said three gunmen were involved in the attack. No organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Libya has been a haven for Islamic militants since the toppling of dictator Moammar Gadhafi. The country is split between rival governments, each backed by an array of local militias.
