UN envoy for Libya holds Malta talks before landing in Tripoli seeking ceasefire
United Nations special envoy to Libya, former Jordanian foreign minister Abdelilah Al-Khatib has landed in Tripoli this evening after holding talks in Malta with foreign minister Tonio Borg.
Al-Khatib – who has been appointed by UN secretary General Ban-Ki Moon to seek an end to the escalating violence and ensure that humanitarian aid gets to those in need in Libya, arrived in Malta late yesterday afternoon with a special UN flight.
The envoy travelled directly from New York accompanied by a high-powered delegation who also met with Minister Tonio Borg.
No immediate details of the meetings were made known to the media from the foreign office.
Ban Ki-Moon said on Friday in New York the most immediate challenge is the humanitarian aspect because civilians have borne the brunt of the violence.
Al-Khatib called it a "delicate and crucial mission" and said he is "prepared to meet all parties concerned."
