UN report suggests war crimes in Sri Lanka

The United Nations said widespread shelling by the Sri Lankan government killed most of the civilians in the final months of the war in 2009.

In a report on possible war crimes during the end of the 26-year-long war, the UN also accuses Tamil Tigers rebels of using civilians as human shields.  The UN has now called for an independent international investigation.

However, Sri Lankan government has rubbished the report, as claimed its findings are biased and fraudulent. It also denied that thousands of civilians were killed.

“The Sri Lankan army is not responsible and Sri Lankan government is not responsible,” a government spokesman told news media. “We never shelled or we never bombed. We never targeted innocent civilians. It’s a wrong allegation and we can prove it.”
