Melita back on track for title
On Saturday the last game of the second round (from four) of the Cricket Winter league was played between Marsa C.C and Melita C.C.
The last time these two teams met the Marsa team had a big win, in fact their only win to date. The Marsa team were missing Derek Ali from their team from that game.
The Melita team batted first and opened up with the juniors Eric Krishna (one run) and Will Pettit (playing in his first game , retiring with the local rule after fifteen balls, and making seven runs). Dave Borg also retired (after forty balls), making thirty four runs which included a couple of boundaries.
Chris Riordan kept up his good form making a valuable fifty four runs which included three fours. Sam Aquilina showed good form scoring forty runs from thirty two balls which included two fours and a six. Chris Naudi played a gale force innings of thirty two runs from thirteen balls which included two sixes and two fours. From their thirty overs the Melita team scored an impressive 234 runs, a similar score which Marsa had scored against them in the first round. For the Marsa team Tony Azzopardi was the main wicket taker with two while Joy Ghoseroy and Sarfraz Ali took a wicket each.
The Marsa reply was of to a good start with Azzopardi scoring twenty six runs, but unfortunately this was the highest score for the team. Joy Ghoseroy scored twenty four runs while Sarfraz Ali and Daniel Galea (highest score to date) both scored eighteen runs. Frank Spiteri scored ten runs. The overs ran out for the Marsa team and could only muster up 151 runs losing by 83 runs.
For Melita Justin Farrin Thorne was the main wicket taker with two while five other bowlers took a wicket each. From the win the Melita team earned twelve points and climbed to second position four points behind the leaders Krishna. Marsa earned three points and are four points behind Melita.
Next Saturday the Melita team take on the leaders Krishna. The Sunoco cricket Academy will be from 9:00 till 10:30 am.
