Melita hopes still alive
On Saturday the Cricket Winter league continued with the league leaders Krishna C.C looking for a win to confirm they would be the Winter league champions, playing Marsa C.C.
The Krishna team batted first and were of to a flying start with Puneet Gupta making twenty two runs which included five fours. Andy Mitchell batted well retired after forty balls and scored thirty runs. A couple of quick wickets fell and Krishna were suddenly in trouble.
John Rusher joined John Grima at the crease and put on an impressive partnership and raised the Krishna hopes. Rusher made seventeen runs while Grima retired making thirty seven runs. Tony Slater made eight runs and Andy Lenard eighteen runs.
With extras the Krishna team made what was thought to be a healthy score of 165 runs. For Marsa Tony Azzopardi took two wickets and George Agius one.
In reply Ronnie Saco opened the batting and opened up with a barrage of shots, one which went over the long off boundary. H
e was finally caught brilliantly by Andy Lenard who had to run and dive to take the catch. Sacco made forty runs of twenty nine balls which included four fours and two sixes. A couple of quick wickets fell and the Krishna team suddenly saw hope.
Derek Ali joined Frank Spiteri and together took the game away from the Krishna team. Spiteri making thirty three runs from twenty five balls including three fours and a six, while Powerhouse Ali retired making sixty five runs including seven fours and three sixes. Lenard came on to bowl and took three quick wickets but the Marsa team made the runs comfortably. Lenard ended with four wickets while Mike Caruana took two and Tony Slater took one.
The Marsa team face league contenders Melita next week. Melita need to earn eleven points to win the League.
Saturday morning the Sunoco cricket academy will be from 9:00 till 10:30am.
