Marsa win against touring team
On Saturday the Marsa C.C hosted the first touring team for 2014, George Tye’s XI (first tour) who are from England. On a windy day which mad the visitors feel at home, they won the toss and elected to bat first in the thirty over encounter.
With strong winds you would usually associate at least from one end , a quick bowler in which Marsa had Niraj Khanna who in four overs took two wickets for eight runs.
After Khanna the Tye batsmen had to mainly face slow bowling and couple close to medium. John Grima had a good day behind the stumps taking three stumpings, the slow bowling was too much of a temptation for the batsmen. The visitors managed to score 154 four runs from their overs.
Az Sykes was the top scorer with thirty eight runs which included four fours. Rich Joseph scored twenty three runs , Rupert Murray twenty two runs and Ed Linden seventeen runs, being the main scorers. James Davidson scored eleven runs towards the end of the innings.
The rest of the wickets which were taken were shared between Sarfraz Ali, Paul Bradley, Matthew Gillard, Sumair Khan, Tony Slater and Kevin Krishna. The Marsa team needed just over five runs an over to win.
Haroon Majeed and Sumair Khan opened the innings for the home side. As expected Majeed began to blast away, alas he was first to go scoring twenty three runs from nineteen balls which included four fours.
Two quick wickets fell and suddenly the Tye team was on the prowl. Khan and Niraj Khanna put a stop to that. Khan went on to make a gallant thirty seven runs which included three fours and a six while Khanna went on to top score with forty nine runs not out. Tony Slater made ten runs and there were thirty seven extras. The Tye bowlers found it hard to control the ball with the strong wind. Nick Panson, George Tye, Jamie Berry and Guy Sowdon were the wicket takers for the visitors.
Next week the second touring team New City C.C who are also on their first tour will be playing a three game series against the home side. First game on Thursday and two over the weekend.
The Sunoco Cricket academy/nursery will be from 9:00 am till 10:30am.
