Marsa too strong for Howitzers C.C

The Marsa C.C took on new touring team Howitzers C.C from Northhamptonshire, England.

They have won the league they compete in three times since 2007.

On Sunday the Marsa team were looking for a whitewash. For the third time the visitors batted first, this time in a thirty over game. With ground conditions wet tey still made a very good score of 160 runs. Jeremy Vella top scored with thirty six runs and Phil Baker made twenty nine runs.Iain Burkinshaw made twenty one, and James Scott chipped in with seventeen, being the main scorers. For Marsa Simon Lavendar  took two wickets while Ronnie Sacco, Gordon Hewitt, Sid Anand and Mike Caruana all took a wicket each.

Andrew Naudi took Marsa to a brilliant start making fifty seven runs from forty four balls which include four fours and a six/ He was well supported by John Rusher and Tim Wheeler. A couple of wickets fell cheaply and suddenly Howitzers were back on top. Ronnie Sacco managed to take a little bit of the pressure making twenty seven runs and also managed to hit a hat trick of fours along the way. With three overs remaining the Marsa team  needed  to make twenty six runs. Simon Lavenar (nineteen runs) and Sid Anand (sixteen runs) were at the crease and did not let their teammates down making the runs with four balls to spare. Anand finished of the game with a marvellous six. For the visitors Jeremy Vella and David Hinton took three wickets each while Mark Braid and Austin Schwarz took a wicket each. This was by far the best game of this series. Marsa win the series three to nil.

On the Saturday Howitzers managed a similar score, 162 but this was a forty over game. Iain Burkinshaw top scored with forty nine runs and Mark Braid made twenty two. The wickets were shared between seven Marsa bowlers.

In reply the Marsa batsmen mad the required runs in thirty two overs, Simon Lavendar top scoring with forty one runs, Chris Naudi thirty seven runs, Andrew Naudi twnty six runs and Joy GHoseroy twenty runs. Wickets for Howitzers were taken by, David Hinton, Jeremy Vella, Matthew Eastwood, Mark Braid and James Scott.

In the first game of the series The Howitzers made a poor 75 runs in the twenty over match. Iain Burkinshaw top scored with nineteen runs and Austin Schwarz made sixteen. The home side made the runs within eleven overs, Zubair Raja top scored with twenty eight runs, Niraj Khanna sixteen and Bikram Arora twelve. For the visitors Dave Evans took two wickets while Jeremy Vella and Matthew Eastwood took one each. 

Next weekend sees the return of  Pretenders C.C who will be on their sixth tour.

On Saturday the Sunoco Cricket Academy/nursery will be from 9:00 am till 10:30am.
