Marsa Magpies win cricket title
On Saturday the final of the MCA Cricket Winter Wallop was played between the Marsa Magpies and the Melita Bees.
The Bees won the toss and elected to field first. The Magpies took full advantage batting first and posted a fantastic score of 193 runs and made sure they had the runs on the board. Andy Naudi played his best innings for the tournament and scored a wonderful half century (51) from twenty six balls which included thre fours and two sixes. Haroon master blaster Najeed was not far off, blasting forty eight runs from twenty one balls which included four boundaries and two sixes.
Mark G.Sacco opened the batting and gave his team a solid start making thirty four runs from his thirty balls. Sarfraz Ali his opening partner made seventeen. Ronne Sacco mad fourteen not out from eight balls. Feroz Ahmed Akbar missed out after being run out for two runs. Extras were costly for the Bees totalling twenty seven. For Melita, Frank Spiteri took two wickets while Tim Wheeler took one. Interestingly enough the Bees used nine bowlers.
The Melita team who were looking at back to back Winter titles , had a horrendous start, losing Frank Spiteri for five runs, Jack Barrit for eleven runs and Matt McKeogh for four runs. The Bees were revived by Derek Ali who scored fifty one runs from his thirty balls which included four boundaries and a six. Joy Ghoseroy played a hand in the revival scoring twenty seven runs. Unfortunately for the Bees, their batting strength stopped there.
Garret Kampff (five runs), Tim Wheeler (ten runs not out), Ian Pendelbury (five runs) and Daniel Galea (three runs) all tried hard. Not to take anything away from the Marsa bowling who only gave away thirteen extras. The Bees totalled 131 runs. Andt Naudi took two wickets for the Magpies while Ronnie Sacco, Sarfraz Ali, Malik Asif and Haroon Majeed all took a wicket each. The Marsa Magpies win the game and the Winter Wallop.
