International friendly cancelled following London riots

The international friendly between England and The Netherlands has been cancelled due to the riots that have rocked London in recent days.

Tuesday afternoon the Football Association have called off the England friendly international against the Netherlands because of the riots in London.
The fixture was due to be played at Wembley tonight but after a third consecutive night of rioting the game has been called off.
Even though the match has been cancelled, the England squad’s morning training session has gone ahead as planned at the London Colney training base.
The FA released a short statement saying: “It is with regret that tomorrow’s international fixture with Holland at Wembley has been called off.”
The police presence required at the stadium would have been significant and, with rioting over the next few nights a strong possibility, police would have struggled to stretch themselves.
England defender Rio Ferdinand backed the decision on Twitter, saying: “England vs Holland game is off, good call. Who wants to see a game of football when our country is in turmoil.”
Hertfordshire police held high-level talks yesterday morning over whether the friendly between Ghana and Nigeria, due to take place at Watford’s Vicarage Road, should go ahead.
The decision was taken to cancel the friendly as well due to the riots.
A statement released by Hertfordshire police read: “The planned friendly between Nigeria and Ghana at Watford FC tonight (August 9) has been cancelled as a precaution due to potential demands on Hertfordshire Constabulary as a result of what is happening in London.
“The decision was not taken lightly and was done in full consultation with the club. We hope those fans who had been due to attend the game will understand the reasons why. Any fans that had been planning to travel are being asked not to come to Watford.
“In relation to tickets, please visit the Watford FC website where details will be announced in due course.”
Four League Cup matches have been postponed in the past 24 hours due to the rioting: West Ham United - Aldershot Town, Charlton Athletic - Reading, Crystal Palace - Crawley Town, and Bristol City - Swindon Town.
Premier League games due to be played in London this weekend could also be in doubt, including Tottenham’s game against Everton at White Hart Lane.
