Manchester United win as Chelsea are held by Stoke
Manchester United defeated West Brom 2-1 after having a shaky start.
Wayne Rooney scored the opener, but a error from United’s goalkeeper David de Gea gifted West Brom with the equaliser. United were lucky to get the winning goal thanks to an own goal from Steven Reid.
Wayne Rooney scored the first goal of the match as early as the 13th minute. Rooney flicked the ball to Ashley Young and then picked up the return pass before burying a shot in the far corner.
The Manchester United goalkepper handed the Baggies the equaliser when he allowed Shane Long's shot to squirm under his hands and cancel out Wayne Rooney's opener.
United finally claimed the winner on 81 minutes as impressive new signing Young raced in from the left wing and his cross-goal shot was touched on by Gabriel Tamas and lastly deflected off Steven Reid, before finding the bottom left-hand corner of Foster’s net.
This victory proved costly for United as they ended up losing Rafael for 10 weeks with a shoulder injury and Rio Ferdinand could sidelined for a possible six weeks as well with a hamstring injury.
Nemanja Vidic could also be sidelined with a groin injury as he was replaced after 52 minutes.
In Sunday's other game, new Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas' introduction to the Premier League proved to be a testing and frustrating affair as they drew 0-0 at Stoke.
The Portuguese may have raced to the league title with Porto and also won the Europa League last season, but nothing could have prepared him for the challenge he met at the Britannia Stadium in front of a vocal home crowd.
The Blues had the better chances in a game they controlled after the break but despite an encouraging display from striker Fernando Torres, neither he nor his team-mates could crack the Potters' notorious resistance.
