Forlan cup-tied till January

Inter’s new signing Diego Forlan will not be able to play in the Champions League for Inter until January.

Forlan was included in Inter’s Champions League squad list that was handed to UEFA and cannot be removed. This means Inter will have to rely on Giampaolo Pazzini, Diego Milito and Mauro Zarate till January.

Forlan was on the field with his former team Atletico Madrid on July 28 and August 4 against Strømsgodset.

It seems Inter did not properly research the situation when they signed the former Atletico Madrid player as they thought he would be part of Inter’s team in the group phase.

A statement on Inter’s official website confirms the situation:
Diego Forlan will be able to play European football with Inter from January. The striker is cup-tied for the 2011/12 Champions League group phase due to his involvement in the Europa League third qualifying round against Norwegian outfit Strømsgodset, on 28 July and 4 August. The Spanish club subsequently reached the Europa League group stage after beating Portugal's Vitoria Guimaraes (18 and 25 August), when Forlan did not play because negotiations were in progress with Inter.
