Bayern crush Manchester City as United are held by Basel
Mario Gomez struck twice as Bayern Munich flaunted their Champions League credentials with an impressive 2-0 defeat of Manchester City.
Poacher Gomez snaffled a double (38 and 45) with a combined range of six yards, Bayern stifling their visitors' early vigour before cantering to the most comfortable of Group A victories.
It might have been different had former City defender Jerome Boateng been penalised for hefty first-half challenges on David Silva and Micah Richards in the box.
But other than those incidents a half-chance for Edin Dzeko was all City carved out as they left Germany still searching for a first win at elite level.
By the half-hour Bayern had a grip they never looked like relinquishing, and Gomez soon gobbled up two rebounds after Joe Hart had performed heroics to keep out first Thomas Muller and then Daniel van Buyten.
Only the goalkeeper's agility kept the score respectable after the break as Bastian Schweinsteiger was thwarted from distance and a reflex left-handed stop denied Gomez a hat-trick.
In the other Group A match Early strikes from Marek Hamsik and Edinson Cavani gifted Napoli a welcome 2-0 victory against Villarreal in the Champions League Group A game at Stadio San Paolo.
The Italian club took the lead in the 15 minute through Marek Hamsik's fine strike before Edinson Cavani converted a penalty two minutes later to ensure Walter Mazzarri's men earned their first victory in Europe this season.
Claudio Ranieri continued his winning start to life as Inter Milan manager with a 3-2 victory in their Champions League match against CSKA Moscow.
Ranieri started his tenure at the San Siro with a 3-1 Serie A defeat of Bologna and followed up with another victory over Leonid Slutsky's side in the Luzhniki Stadium.
Lucio gave Inter a sixth-minute lead and Giampaolo Pazzini doubled the lead midway through the first half, before Alan Dzagoev and Vagner Love levelled the scores.
However, substitute Mauro Zarate blasted in the winner 11 minutes from time to get Inter's Group B campaign up and running after the shock home defeat at the hands of Trabzonspor on matchday one.
In the other Group B match Trabzonspor shocked Lille as they played toa 1-1 draw.
Ashley Young snatched a Champions League point for Manchester United at Old Trafford where Basel came within two minutes of claiming a shock victory in a thrilling contest that ended 3-3.
In an end-to-end match in Group C, United swept into a two-goal lead before the Swiss visitors struck back with three second-half goals.
Danny Welbeck (15) opened the scoring with a scruffy shot that went in off a post after Antonio Valencia's cross was touched on by Fabio for Ryan Giggs, who calmly laid the ball into the path of the United striker.
And two minutes later Welbeck added a second - this time with a much cleaner strike - following another Giggs assist.
Yet the Swiss club were always a threat and both goalkeepers made vital saves before Fabian Frei (58) pulled a goal back with a well-struck shot from 15 yards after United had failed to clear Cabral's corner.
Within 90 seconds Basel were level as Fabian Frei's cross was headed home by his unmarked namesake Alexander.
And it was Alexander Frei who crashed home Basel's third from the penalty spot 12 minutes from time following Valencia's clumsy challenge on Fabian.
But with 89 minutes on the clock, Nani's deep cross was met by Young, who found the bottom left-hand corner with a clinical header at the far post.
Although substitute Dimitar Berbatov hit the side-netting in injury time, Basel deserved their point to leave the visitors top of the group.
A first-half goal from Bruno Cesar gave Benfica their first win of the group stage, and condemn the Romanian champions Otelul Galati to a night of misery.
Cesar netted five minutes from the interval and his effort proved the only difference between the sides in a tight affair in the other Group C match.
In Group D Real Madrid recorded a comfortable 3-0 win over Ajax at the Bernabeu in their second Champions League Group D game.
Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock midway through the first half after a good start from the Dutch champions, before Kaka doubled Madrid's lead in the closing stages of the first 45. Karim Benzema then added a third minutes after the break to put the match to bed.
Meanwhile in the other Group D match Olympique Lyonnais marked their 100th Champions League encounter with their first group stage victory of the 2011-12 campaign, defeating Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 in France.
During a dominant first half, Remi Garde’s side would register on two occasions. Bafetimbi Gomis continued his good recent form with a delightful chip, while Bakary Kone battered the second home from a corner.
