Adebayor double sinks Aston Villa
Emmanuel Adebayor’s two first-half goals saw Tottenham Hotspurs move to third place in the Premier League standings after they defeated Aston Villa 2-0 on Monday evening.
It was the best home coming present coach Harry Redknapp could get after the coach returned to his job following minor heart procedure.
Having put an early header wide, Adebayor made amends on 14 minutes with an acrobatic finish after Gareth Bale returned a half-cleared corner into the penalty box.
And Adebayor then doubled the lead five minutes before half-time with a close-range finish after Bale's low cross caused chaos in the Villa six-yard box.
Spurs missed plenty of chances to increase their lead in the second half, with Adebayor firing wide when clean through and then curling just wide from the edge of the box after once again being teed up by Bale, but were rarely troubled as they closed out their eighth victory in nine Premier League games.
It was a victory that took Spurs to 25 points, three clear of Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal and above Newcastle on goal difference. Harry Redknapp's side still have a game in hand on all those sides after their opening game of the season against Everton was postponed.
