Goals from Marco Streller and Alexander Frei sent Basel into the Champions League knockout stages at the expense of Manchester United after a dramatic 2-1 win for the hosts in Switzerland.

The result sees United crash out of Europe's premier club competition at the group stage for the first time since 2005, and Basel equal their best performance in the tournament since 2003.

Furthermore, United's long term prospects suffered a further blow with the first-half loss of captain Nemanja Vidic to what appears to be a serious knee injury.

Benfica defeated Otelul Galati 1-0 at Estadio da Luz in Wednesday night's Champions League encounter, a sixth-minute goal from Oscar Cardozo proving to be the winner as the hosts top Group C with their unbeaten record intact.

The Paraguayan struck early to condemn Otelul to a winless campaign, and now they can look forward to a favourable draw after topping the group.

Manchester City crashed out of the Champions League on Wednesday night despite beating Bayern Munich 2-0 at Eastlands, as Napoli secured second place in Group A.

David Silva put his team in the lead with a terrific strike following a smart touch from Edin Dzeko, before Yaya Toure doubled City's advantage after a nexus of intricate passes which resulted in the Ivorian calmly slotting home in the second half.

However, goals from Gokhan Inler and Marek Hamsik for the Italians at Villarreal were enough to ensure that they maintained their one-point advantage over the English side to progress.

Second-half strikes from Gokhan Inler and Marek Hamsik secured a 2-0 victory for Napoli against Villarreal at El Madrigal, putting the Italian club into the Champions League last 16.

The Swiss midfielder's unstoppable shot from long range with 25 minutes to play gave Napoli the lead before Hamsik doubled their advantage to give the visitors the win they needed to progress from Group A.

The Serie A side end the group campaign a point ahead of Manchester City who are knocked out of the competition and into the Europa League, despite victory against Group A winners Bayern Munich.

Trabzonspor weathered a tempest from Lille to earn a scoreless draw in northern France, but it was not good enough to see them progress from Champions League Group B.

Needing a point to qualify, and for Inter to at least hold CSKA Moscow in Milan, the Turkish outfit played this match in a backs-to-the-wall fashion, and while they would ride their luck in the opening period, they were a good deal more solid after the interval and ultimately frustrated their more enterprising hosts.

CSKA Moscow progressed to the knockout stages of the Champions League with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Inter in their Group B clash at San Siro on Wednesday night.

With Lille drawing with Trabzonspor in France, the Russians appeared to be heading out with their game tied at one goal apiece, Esteban Cambiasso having almost immediately cancelled out Seydou Doumbia's opener for the visitors.

However, after Diego Milito had hit the post from just three yards out, Vasili Berezutski then nicked a famous victory for CSKA when he headed home Aleksandrs Cauna's corner in the closing stages.

Lyon staged a memorable comeback at Stadion Maksimir in Group D of the Champions League, as they produced a stunning second half performance to defeat Dinamo Zagreb 7-1 and overturn a huge goal difference deficit to send Ajax out of the competition.

Dinamo were reduced to 10 men early on but took the lead in the 40th minute. Lyon equalised in on the stroke of half time and were rampant in the second period as they scored another six times to secure their place in the last 16 in astonishing circumstances. Bafetimbi Gomis was OL's hero, scoring the fastest-ever Champions League hat-trick as part of a four-goal haul.

Real Madrid have equalled their club record of 15 consecutive wins by beating Ajax 3-0 at the Amsterdam ArenA in their last Champions League Group D match.

Jose Callejon gave the Blancos the lead early on with a calm finish after being set up by Kaka. Ajax then thought they had equalised twice, but goals from Nicolas Lodeiro and Miralem Sulejmani were wrongly disallowed.

Gonzalo Higuain showed his class as he made it two for the guests in the closing stages of the first half. Callejon then beat the offside trap well into stoppage time to add a third for Madrid, as the home side crashed out on goal difference courtesy of Lyon's incredible 7-1 triumph over Dinamo Zagreb.
