Mutu must pay Chelsea £14.3m
Adrian Mutu has been ordered to pay Chelsea £14.3 million in compensation after losing his final appeal at the Swiss Federal Court.
The Romanian, currently serving a nine-month doping ban in Italy, was sacked by the West London club in 2004 after testing positive for cocaine use.
The subsequent five-year legal case has seen both the Court of Arbitration for Sport and FIFA rule that the forward must pay Roman Abramovich's club the amount of compensation.
They have now been joined by the Swiss supreme court, who found that CAS followed correct legal process when it dismissed Mutu's challenge to the FIFA decision.
The other issue considered by the federal panel was whether the compensation amount violated legal principles.
"It reached the conclusion that this was not the case and the Romanian footballer's appeal was unfounded," the court stated.
The compensation total is determined by the lost transfer fee of eight million euros when Mutu - who later signed as a free agent with Juventus - moved to Fiorentina, plus unserved time on his contract.
Chelsea have yet to receive any compensation, while Mutu is expected to leave Fiorentina in early October once his ban for after twice testing positive for the banned stimulant sibutramine is served.
