Champions Valletta start new season with victory as Hamrun and Balzan share the spoils
Champions Valletta started the 2012/2013 season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Tarxien Rainbows.
The match was evenly played between both teams with very few chances in front of goal.
Valletta's shaun Bajada went close on the third minute while Danielo Meira Santos' shot went just wide on the 19th minute.
Valletta finally managed to score the only goal of the match on the 68th minute. Off a cross by shaun bajada, Jonathan Bajada made no mistake when he headed the ball in past goalkeeper Nicky Vella.
Valletta continued to take control of the match till the final whistle with Tarxien having very few opportunities on goal.
Orosco Anonam was voted BOV Player of the Match.
In the earlier match Hamrun Spartans and Balzan played to a 2-2 draw.
Hamrun managed to start the match on a positive note when they took the lead on the 14th minute thanks to a perfect freekick by Massimo Grima.
Hamrun did not stay in the lead for long as just five minutes later Balzan scored the equaliser.
Off a freekick by Pedro dos Santos Calcado, Matthew Mendy headed the ball past goalkeeper Andrea Cassar.
On the 41st minute, Balzan were awarded a penalty when Angel Oshev brought Elton da Silva down inside the area. Pedro dos Santos Calcado's effort from the penalty spot was blocked by goalkeeper Andrea Cassar.
Hamrun regained the lead on the 51st minute. Off a cross by Angel Yoshev, Terrence Scerri beat goalkeeper Matthew Camilleri with his shot.
On the 66th minute, Balzan equalised again when Pedro dos Santos Calcado beat goalkeeper Andrea Cassar with his shot after receiving a perfect cross.
In added time, Balzan were reduced to ten men when Renato Garcia Conceicao was sent off.
Andrea Cassar was voted BOV Player of the Match.
