Birkirkara to meet Mosta in Super Cup
The increasing popularity of women’s football is evident primarily from statistical data relating to a growing number of players participating in the divisions. There are also better quality players in the competitions organised by the MFA.
Besides the National League and the Cup there is also the Super Cup played between the Champions and the Cup holders of the previous season. This was first held in season 2004-2005 with Birkirkara winning that first edition. They went on to land the honour twice more, with Mosta emulating them with three successes. Hibernians come next with two wins.
This year Birkirkara and Mosta will be locking horns on Monday 10 September in what should be a keen encounter between two of the best teams in Malta. It is expected to be an attractive duel that should draw a sizeable crowd at the Centenary Stadium where kick-off is at 8.00 pm.
Prior to the match there will be a Get a Friend Festival for girls aged between 9 and 16 years. The two-hour event starting at 5.00 pm, is part of an ongoing programme organised by the MFA Technical Centre and aimed at promoting football as a fun and enjoyable activity which should also strengthen the girls' skills.
Applications for participation in the festival can be made from the following link: http://www.mfa.com.mt/en/downloads/maindownloads/bycategory/9/name/asc/10/1/other.htm
Incidentally the women's league is due to start on Tuesday 18 September just eight days after the Super Cup curtain-raiser. As in previous years the competition is expected to be the main attraction of the season where matches should offer a pleasant spectacle in a family atmosphere.
