End of the line for Zeman as Roma manager

Roma have sacked coach Zdenek Zeman following a poor run of form in Serie A.

A surprise 4-2 defeat at home to Cagliari on Friday night stretched their winless run in the league to five matches, with the Giallorossi lying eighth in the standings coming into this weekend's round of fixtures.

That prompted a meeting of club directors on Saturday, when the decision was taken to replace Zeman after seven months in charge.

Aurelio Andreazzoli has been appointed interim coach.

A statement on Roma's official website said: "AS Roma wishes to announce that Mr Zdenek Zeman has been relieved of his duties as first-team coach.

"The club thanks Mr Zeman and his collaborators for the professionalism and dedication shown in carrying out the job."

Roma's chief executive Italo Zanzi explained the reasons behind Zeman's dismissal.

"Our decision today is based on confidence and consistency," he said.

"To be clear our ownership has faith in our players, our football management and our strategy.

"We faced a difficult situation but addressed it in a responsible and strategic way.

"Aurelio Andreazzoli is a true football professional and has a strong track record with AS Roma. He knows the value of our players and has their respect.

"We believe in our team and will continue to fight for every point this season"
