Stefano Borgonovo passes away
Former AC Milan and Fiorentina striker Stefano Borgonovo has passed away at the age of 49 after a lengthy battle with ALS.
The Monza and Brianza native started his career in 1981 before retiring in 1996.
He was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in 2008.
As a result of his affliction the Stefano Borgonovo foundation was started to raise awareness and funds to combat the disease, along with a testimonial match in 2008 that was organized by former clubs Fiorentina and AC Milan.
The Italian national team will wear a black armband in honour of Borgonovo during tonight’s Confederations Cup match against Spain.
Along with winning the 1990 Champions League with the Rossoneri, Borgonovo spent time at Brescia, Udinese, Pescara, Fiorentina, Come and Sambenedettese. He also made three appearances for the Italian national team in 1989.
