Birkirkara Champions League fairytale comes to an end

Birkirkara were defeated 3-0 by Slovakian champions MŠK Žilina in the second round of the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League last night.

Goals from Jozef Piaček, Ivan Lietava and Tomáš Oravec helped their side overturn the first leg defeat against the Malta champions last week to advance to the third round with a 3-1 aggregate.

MŠK Žilina controlled the game from the start and on the 21st minute Jozef Piaček put the hosts ahead when he headed in Emil Rilke’s precise right-wing pass. Birkirkara were still in the match as they had the goal from the first leg. In the second half, Birkirkara’s only real chance came when Michael Galea’s header went just wide.

However on the 77th minute Ivan Lietava doubled the score. In added time Tomáš Oravec, finally got his goal when on the 92nd minute he put the game out of reach for Birkirkara.
